Two young Queenslanders have been awarded Australian Resources Industry Skills and Education (ARISE) scholarships to assist with their first year of studying engineering.

Lana Lockhart, a graduate from San Sisto College, said the scholarship of $5000 had enabled her to attend resource industry networking events and conferences, making valuable connections including mentors in the University Women in Engineering Club.

“It has been an exciting year as I’ve started my Bachelor of Engineering and Environmental Science degree at Griffith University,” said Lana.

“I’m passionate about sustainability and hope to ultimately have a career in project management helping to discover innovative ways to improve environmental responsibility and resource efficiency.”

Fellow scholarship winner, Louis Drago, a former student of Wavell State High School, is in his first year of a Business/Engineering (honours) degree at Queensland University of Technology.

Louis said he appreciated both the financial assistance provided by the scholarship and the opportunities it offered into the resources industry.

“The resources sector is huge in Queensland and there are some great work opportunities in civil and project engineering,” said Louis.

The scholarships are supported by BHP and BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), foundation partners of the ARISE initiative, established to extend the work of the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) into New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia.

Mariette Bylsma, Head of BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Operations said BMA is proud to be supporting Lana and Louis as they commenced their tertiary studies in engineering.

“We are proud to invest in the next generation of engineering professionals,” said she said.

“Lana and Louis received these scholarships because of their academic performance and their passion for the resources sector.

“This scholarship and the first year of University is just the beginning of a bright future for them and we are proud to have played a part in it.”
